New School

From what I understand, there has been talk of building a new school in Paris for decades, but I've also been lead to believe that it has never been as serious as what is going on now. The school boards have selected an architecture firm to work with (actually, it is two firms who have teamed up for the job), students and faculty have been surveyed, and last night they had a community meeting to begin creating a community vision for the project. In light of these developments, I would like to outline the top three reasons I hope this project happens.

#1- One issue that I see in this school on a daily basis is that of students not motivated to do well in school. They simply do not see the value in education, and in many cases, who could blame them? Many of our students travel to other towns for sports, to visit family, or any one of countless other reasons and see communities that have shown the importance of education by investing in it. The physical school building as an obvious and unmistakable representation of the value a community places on education. I honestly believe that many of the issues plaguing our school- and by extension, the community- will be greatly alleviated by a new school.

#2- The location of our current building has many drawbacks.
a-Currently, school property consists of the building and the sidewalk around it. Students are able to simply cross the street and be outside the reach of the school's jurisdiction. This leads to a serious public relations issue. Anyone visiting the town (people looking to move to the area, perhaps) drives by and sees dozens of teens who are obviously students at the high school standing around smoking, swearing, and sometimes fighting in plain view of teachers and administrators who are unable to do anything about it. This does not present a very favorable picture of the school or the community.
b-Safety is another issue brought on by the location of our school. When students are entering or leaving the building, they must negotiate heavy traffic on one of the the busiest roads in town. It doesn't take an expert to realize that 600 hundred teenagers exiting a building into heavy traffic is a recipe for disaster.
c-This is one of the only schools I am aware of that doesn't provide parking for students and visitors to athletic events. Students have to park on side streets, sometimes blocks away, in order to attend school in this building. Others pay for parking. Fans visiting the school for sporting events in Eveland Gymnasium face the same parking problem and the same perils of crossing busy streets.

#3- Lastly, these facilities have simply become inadequate to house 21st century learners and educators. This building was designed and built over 100 years ago. How many other things in our life are still effective after a century of use? Don't get me wrong, there are a few things that are just as useful today as they were 100 years ago, but a school that needs to prepare its students for a dynamic and increasingly technologically-advanced workplace is not one of them.

Please respond by commenting on my reasons or add your own reasons to the list.

  3. I really enjoyed reading this blog. I can agree with almost everything your pointing out. My parents talk to me at home about how to be careful and use the cross walk while crossing the street. I believe they are right because that is a busy street and there could be an accident very easily.

  4. Mr. Ogle-
I would like to start off my saying that your blogs are really good. I agree with a lot of things your saying.
In this blog you said how the locationo the school plays a big part. I also think its stupid how the kids are able to cross the street and smoke. This makes the school look really bad. I also agree with you when you say that our location of the school is a saftey issue. I understand how people could just get hurt because a). There is a lot of highschool students sudenly coming form the school and just walking into the street (and not even looking to see if a car is coming). And b).Its a busy road and some drivers get really nervous when there is a lot of kids around.

  5. I agree with your thoughts about the location of our school building. It is very dangerous with the main roads and traffic, but it is also very convient to get to and there are many food places surrounding it for us to get lunch.

  6. I agreed with everything you said about the school. The smoking at Hardee's is a little crazy and all the fights are just horrible. Also, having to pay for parking instead of the school just creating a parking lot is a little stupid. However, I do feel that the Paris Tigers and PHS have made a lot of history in our small town of Paris and many will be sad to see the school and the mascot be taken away, including me. Once a tiger, always a tiger. :)

  8. I think it is a very good idea to build a new school and make it closed campus. I am looking foward to leaving school next year for lunch, but a lot of students go out and smoke and do a bunch of bad stuff.

  9. i think its pretty funny they are still talking about a new school. I dont think my class of 2013 will see it.):
they always talk but they never acutally do anything! I think all your reasons made perfect sense though!

  10. I don't really mind where our school is, but there are things about the school that I don't like. For one, I HATE the stairs. I know they are talking about making the new school one level, that would be neat and better in my opinion. For two, with the new school in mind, they want to bring some other towns in to Paris to combine with us. Well I would like to see it stay as Paris Tigers. I think that ruins the whole idea of the new school. Plus, if we were to combine, what would happen to their towns? Wouldn't they eventually die down? So I'm not sure that's a good idea either. Well, this is what i think about the new school :)

  11. I agree with you that the school's parking is bad. What I like about our school is that when we get to be juniors and seniors, we get to go out for lunch. I think students will miss that if the school moves.

  12. I like your thinking Mr. Ogle. I know many students wouldn't like the fact that if we had closed campus, but it would be so much better. To many kids skip and don't even care because they think they can survive without an education. Our new school needs to be more fun and educational to keep students in school instead of being blah. I'm glad that this school will be new in the future because maybe kids will come to schooll more often.

  13. I really think that they should build the new high school. I know once I become 16 and get to drive I don't want to have to pay 2 or 3 hundred dollars just to drive too school. I live a block from the school and I could just walk, but, having the privelage of having your license is a huge thing for a lot of teens, & most people can't afford the parking or things like that. :)

  15. I think it would be really awesome to get a new school. It would be a really big benefit to the town. If we get a new high school we might be more motivated to learn because there would be newer resources. Also, I agree that it makes our school look really bad when people from the highschool go just across the street to smoke and fight. If we get the new highschool I wouldn't mind having a closed campus for lunch either.

  17. I think that a new school will be beneficial since technology is becoming an important part of life the school can incorporate technology with school.

  18. A big problem with the location of the school is that our football field is about a mile away from the school! During football season, the band goes out to the field to practice, and it is a pain in the butt! we have to take a bus there a and back, we get maybe twenty mins. of practice, and we are always late to lunch which is an even bigger problem for the juniors and seniors.

  19. In your blog you talk about how other towns have spent their money on education and it shows. I recently visited my aunt in Wisconsin and we got to talking about their new highschool that had been built just a year ago. In all, the school was over 96 million dollars. Now, a year later, news papers have shown statistics on how the grades from 9-12 grade has increased a great amount. This goes to show that the learning environment is huge!

  20. I think the building of the new school is a good idea and it seems like its gonna be really nice but my class 2014 will probably not be attending this school so its really not up to us most dont care because they wont see it

  22. Getting a new school will help with all the little problems, but i believe that the biggest problem of all is how much is will cost to maintain ans keep the new school running.

  23. I think we should kind of have a new school then again we shouldn't because i'm use to the Paris High School i'm at now i don't want to have to learn my way around the other one. Plus when they say there going to build a knew one they get some kids hopes up because some really want a new school but after they say it they really don't end up building one. I think it's just a waste of time really I mean if you build it somewhere that's to far not many kids are going to be making it to school. That's just my opion but then again it would be kind of cool to have a new school with bigger hallways lockers and other sport things you can join like they should make a swim team and put a lake around the school and have a fishing team etc.. who knows though.

  25. I think the new school is a good idea and good motivation. Maybe if the students were given a new place they would be anxious to go to school. I also believe if student would respecct a new school with brand new additions and technology in it. The worst thing that could happen is that things would remain the same, but you'd still have a nice school.

  26. I beleive that a new school would be the best option right now. Paris is not exactlty the nicest place on earth, but a brand new school would make it somewhat more appealing and students would be glad to go there. I certainly would be excited to attend school, if we had a better one to go to.

  27. First off, i think that most of the blogs that you post are pretty humerous and some of them i can relate to, but about this one. i agree with all of the reason that you have said and you and some of the other people that has posted on her, it does make the school look bad when someone from out of town comes in and sees highschool students across the street smoking, fihgting, and obvious not being in school and the school cant do anything about it because it is on school ground, but on the other hand i do agree about the building of the new school. it will make things a lot for better and maybe it will clean this town up some. although i do have to agree with ashlee, it is going to be sad to see the highschool we are in now, just sit there like redmon and vance that are here in town. they were once nice schools but now they have just turned to curd. i mean in all truth and honesty , my class, so has been said , will either be the first class to gradute the new highschool or the last class to graduate the highschool we are in now.
this is all i have to say for night now.

  28. Location is a big issue, We are right on Main street, and it is a busy street. Not only that, but students do just walk across the street without looking, or using the streetlights to tell you when to cross. So a new school is a great idea, expecially when it won't be on a main road.

  29. This is one of my favorite blogs so far, because you have many good points in this blogs. I also agree with many other people because the school will take a lot of money to continue running and also to even construct. One of the other comments I like is how stupid it is that some teenagers at Paris High School can actually stand at Hardees, right across from the school, and smoke and do what ever they do. I personally think it makes our high school look bad as the cars drive by, but that's just my opinion. :)

  30. I like your ideas and I can't wait until we get a new high school. You make strong points, and I agree with all of them. The one that sticks out to me the most is about our school spirit. Our school spirit is dead. When we get our new school, hopefully it will encourage us and boost our confidence and spirit. I know it will, and I can't wait to see how the new school changes us, and our points of view on things.

  31. I think the new school will be really nic, not that the high school now isn't. But it will be nice for the students that will be there to have air conditioning and all the things we didn't have here.

  32. I decided to go back to 2010 and look at this post because it is so amazing how things have changed. When you wrote this, it was just an idea, but now it is a reality. We are getting a new high school soon and getting a new change in Paris, Illinois.

  33. I think the new school will be really nice for a new environment. Kids will want to learn more if they are in a new school.

  34. This is my favorite blog ever. I completely agree with you! This school is beautiful and has so many great memories in it, but I just don't think it is what the faculty and students deserve. We deserve to sit in chairs that don't cut us when we sit down, we deserve not to be forced to pay attention in 110 degree rooms, and we deserve to not have to pay for parking. I think the whole "paying for parking" thing is ridiculous. There should have been a better well thought out plan for that.

  35. I really like this blog. Although many classes have graduated from this school and many events have went on in this building, this building is no longer capable of meeting all of our school's needs. Many schools have their athletic fields near by and we do not. You have to drive several blocks to get to any of our athletic fields, besides the gym. Along with what you said, this school doesn't give us all the technology we could have at the new school. Also, I agree that having to pay to park to enable you have a parking spot everyday is not ideal. Although, I couldn't drive last year or this year my parents have paid for a spot at the Mason's Lodge for the person that brings me to school, so that we know that we will be able to have a spot everyday. To say the least, I am beyond excited for the new school!

  36. This was my favorite blog yet because it opened up my eyes a bit to a few different reasons why we needed a new high school. As all of the things you said were true there are also some what ifs with a century old standing structure. How actually structurally stable is our building, and if it is, how much longer would t have stayed that way. We have a pretty bad reputation as community in Paris and I believe that our new high school will help clean the slate a little bit. -Logan Cash 5th Hour
