The Final Countdown

Athletes often talk about finishing strong. Whether they are pitchers trying to make sure they do not give up late inning runs, football players pushing to get a few extra yards farther into field goal range to set up a last second scoring opportunity, or basketball players running hard until the final buzzer sounds, we are all familiar with the idea that in order to be successful, one must finish strong. My father used to always walk around the house near the end of a grading period while my brothers and I were doing our homework loudly proclaiming, "We're in the home stretch, boys, go to the whip!" The idea behind all of this is that no matter how strongly, or not so strongly, we have done up to the closing moments of whatever race we are running, we are sure to fail if we just throw up our hands and coast the rest of the way.

For some of you, this first quarter has gone well. You have met every expectation and will likely be rewarded with a fine grade to show your parents. For those in this group, I urge you to not relax; keep pushing until the final buzzer sounds. Never become too relaxed or too complacent with your achievements. It only takes a couple of weeks with your eye off of the prize in order to lose all you have worked for.

For others, this first quarter has been less than extraordinary. For you, this message is even more important. You still have the opportunity to cross the finish line with your head held high. Sure, you may be failing this quarter... who cares? That's right, who cares? Not many teachers would probably have that attitude, but here is the way I see it. Every single one of you should have the goal to graduate from high school. With that singular goal in mind, is failing one quarter the end of the world? The answer is no, so why stop trying just because you failed half of a semester? Why throw in the towel after the first round? In order to get the credits you need to graduate, in order to not have to repeat this course next year, all you have to do is pass the semester. That means that even though you failed the first quarter, a strong second quarter and a good grade on the semester exam can pull your semester average up enough to move on. So I leave you with one, last question: Isn't your future, the promise of possibilities beyond those offered to dropouts, worth nine weeks (barely more than two months) of hard work? If you put in nine weeks of work to pass your classes for this semester, and then repeat that for however many quarters you have left until graduation, you can earn a piece of paper that proves you have what it takes to accomplish your goals; more importantly, it ensures that doors aren't closed on you before you even have a chance to start out in the world.

  1. yeah that is very true mr. ogle just b/c i failed first quarter doesn't mean that i should just throw up my hands and just give up, but you know what im not and the only reason that i failed last quarter was b.c of that essay that i didn't turn in b/c i was stupid about it and i didn't do it. but theis quarter im definately gonna pass so i won't have to take this class again! and it's not that i don't like your class b/c i do but i really don't like english that well so yeah im gonna pass this quarter!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. I definately like this blog mr. ogle. it's meanignful and true, Paris High school does have a record of students just "throwing their hands up and saying i quit", we have a pretty high drop out rate and those students do need to be encouraged to stay in school and like you say have the doors open for them when they finish high schoo. not only does it encourage students to stick it out but you are right on target when u explain that you shouldn't just coast through thinking you are going to get an A. i know i did that last quarter and I have definately learned my lesson, i did slip by with an A-, but barely. If i would have kept my eyes on the prize the whole quarter i wouldnt have been worrying about it the last 2 weeks.

  4. I agree with Kacey. I passed the first quarter with a high B and i was not happy at all. But i`m not just going to say " i hate english class and not try to make the best of it so i can learn something". I have come to learn that i can`t wait until the last week of the quarter and expect to finish out with an A. Second quarter i`m going to keep my head up and work towards that A all quarter. Throwing your hands up and saying I quit is not going to get you anywhere. Kacey is right about the drop out rate, way too many students drop out of school and they arent going to get anywhere in life. Its hard to further your education if you don`t finish high school. All i can say is keep your head up and try your best to make it through those classes you hate! It will pay off in the end.

  5. People need to realize it isn't that hard to pass your class, or even get an A or B. If they fail one quarter, they just have to do really well the second and make sure they pass so they don't have to retake it the next year. I'm not sure about others, but i don't want more than one english class.

  6. Yes I agree with everyone who posted a comment and you Mr. Ogle. I sure didn't get the grade I wanted first quarter ,but im not going to give up till I get the grade I know I should. It will be hard but most things in life are not.

  7. Mr.Ogle i agree with jenna just because i failed 1st quarter doesnt mean i give up on your class... i made one mistake that made me do back in your class! Never again will i do something like that! Its kinda like when your in a basketball game and one of your teammates isnt playing well you dont just give up on them. you pat them on the back and say "keep up the hard work, its gunna be okay". Im gunna pass this quarter with a B or better! We need to pass your class to get out of highschool im not gunna lie i want out as soon as possible.

  8. I really like this blog mr.ogle. And i deffinatly agree with kacey and josey.. You should never give up on accomplishments you want to make in life. You need to keep your head up and look foward in life. The more you try the better chance you will have finishing it.

  9. I also agree with kacey and josey. If you put in effort and do your work you will pass with atleast a D. I got a B last quater and i was pretty upset with myself. Like kacey said we do have a good history of people giving up and dropping out. I dont see why people do that because if you think about it, high school isnt really that hard. You have to try and if you need help, a teacher will be there for help. Thats what teachers get paid for. I like this blog because it describes people i know.

  10. I totally agree! Yes, I got a good grade first quarter but I'm not going to relax and give that up. I don't think anyone else should either. Some people think that just because they have a good grade in a class they can slack off for awhile. That however is not the case. It takes consistant hard work to keep your grades up not just a little work here and there!

  11. I really like this blog because it lets people know to not give up. Many people at Paris High School have the tendancy to just say "I give up, I hate school" Thats not the attitude to have. If you put forth effort in all of your classes, you will only have to take them once not multiple times. Which personal I would rather take a class that i don't like one time, than have to retake it and suffer through it again the next semester or the following year.

  12. This is very true and i agree with the statement that even if you did fail this quater does not mean you should give up. If you give up and let yourself get a bunch of F's through high school, college's are not going to be happy and probably not accept you in because they think you don't apply yourself.

  13. Mr. Ogle,
This is a wonderful blog, it makes a lot of sense. If you did fail first quarter you have second quarter to make up for it. You have some of us who study and still don't do very good on tests but try to do the extra credit to make some points to bring up your grade. Studing is hard for some kids, cause when you study and then flunk a test it makes you feel terrible, like where did I go wrong. You want to make it through every quarter passing so you can get your credits to graduate. It is just hard for some kids to 'know' how to study to get passing grades.

  14. that was a very good blog and pertains to me. it gets you thinking that if you do say screw it or something like that then you ain't going nowhere so i will prevail one because im a junior in a sophmore english and two i am a role model for my cousin alexis and my other cousin shelby and they won't leave me alone if i don't pass again. be a little weird if i do fail. a senior in a sophmore class. that would defenitly be a first for and its a first repeating a class. so all those sophmores who happen to read this out of curiosity, DO NOT FAIL ANYTHING. IT IS MUCH HARDER NEXT YEAR AND CREATES EXTRA WORK. SO DON'T GIVE UP AND KEEP MOVING STRONG.

everthing that you have said in this blog is true we never should just throw in the towel when something in school goes wrong. that is always my problem when something dosent seem right to me or i dont get it i throw in the towel and shut down. im not dumb i know i can learn and do everything right i just choose no to do so. im not going to give up with just a week left in the semestier im going to study until the time comes i need good grades to go to colledge and for wat im wanting to achieve i need all the help i can get

  16. I agree that nine weeks of hard work is all you need to have a futre if you aplly yourself and get what you need done I agree that failing is not the end so you shouln't give up.

  17. When I came back to school you had a quote on the bulletin board and it was about success and that the worse thing in the world is when you don't try. I wish I could say this to my sister Katie, because she doesn't like to try in school, and I wish it would make a difference in her life. I don't think that these kids realize just how much they are messing up their futures. I used to be slacker in school when I was in Jr. High and once I got to high school I realized that I needed to start pushing myself and exceed my expectations, which I have been trying to do. I just hope that once day these kids will wake up and realize what they are really going to do with their lives.

  18. I like this blong because it tells people not to give up on school, or anything. I try my best in school so i dont have to retake any classes,i rather try my best and get everything over with. all you have to do is stick it out and do your best.

  19. I agree with this because when athletes talk about finishing strong there is a lot more to finishing strong.
